Philosophy

The assessment is to determine where the reading struggles occur.  I evaluate the five critical areas of reading that were determined by the National Reading Panel in 2000.  They are: phonological awareness, phonics (spelling), fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I also assess writing. Once the areas have been identified, the more targeted

the treatment is in order to improve the student's reading skills. At every session I am monitoring the student’s progress by taking data on how the student is progressing in the targeted areas. Additionally, I complete intervention-oriented assessment every 3-4 months to be sure the student has succeeded in gaining skills in the targeted areas as well in overall reading.

My philosophy for treating students with reading difficulties is simple.  I provide an intervention-oriented assessment, targeted treatment, and frequent progress monitoring.

Treatment

JPEG_edited.jpg

Treatment is at least once a week with most students being able to handle 50-60 minutes of treatment. Research shows (Shaywitz, 2003) that a child with a reading disability who is not identified early may require as much as 150-300 hours of intensive instruction if they are going to close the reading gap between themselves and peers. Due to family schedules, financial considerations, and other activities, I accommodate a weekly schedule that works best for the family. Children seen once per week make progress and can close the gap, it just takes longer. Providing reading treatment is a long-term commitment on the part of myself and the parents.
